Kebyar (1980)
for flute and piano
Kebyar was my first composition in which electronic instruments were not used. This fundamental stylistic change in my work, not only on the superficial instrumental level but also the conceptual, was in direct relation to my first ethnomusicological studies in Bali.
The term „kebyar“ refers to a Balinese musical style which appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century. Sharp and unpredictable contrasts as well as a kind of ecstatic but always controlled wildness are some of its significant features. Kebyar is also not an imitation of Balinese music but an attempt to realise a particular attitude of playing in my own musical language.
