DIETER MACK
1954 born in Speyer/Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany,
1975-1980 study at Musikhochschule Freiburg (composition with Klaus Huber and Brian Ferneyhough, musictheory with Peter Förtig and piano with Rosa Sabater)
1977-1981 assistant at the Experimental Studio of the Heinrich Strobel Foundation, SWF scholarship-holder of the H.Strobel Foundation in 1980/81
since 1980 various assistantships/ lecturships for musictheory, improvisation and Balinese music at the music-universities Freiburg, Trossingen, Basel and University of Freiburg.
since 1986 professor for musictheory/eartraining at the Musikhochschule Freiburg
since 1980 member of ExVoCo (EXpanded VOice COmpany) Stuttgart (director: Dr. Ewal Liska.)
since 1978 various studies in Bali/Indonesia, South India and Japan, especially one year in Bali (1981/82).
1982 founding of a Balinese Gamelan Ensemble at the Musikhochschule Freiburg
1988 Tour "Portrait of Dieter Mack" in South-East Asia via the Goethe-Institut
1991 "Composer in residence" at School of Music, Wellington/New Zealand
1989 –1991 and 1996-1997 various short-time lectureships in Indonesia in composition, music education, ethnomusicological research
1992-1995 Long-time guest-lecturer (via DAAD - German Academic Exchange Service) at IKIP- Bandung, Indonesia (also joining the national committee for curriculum planning).
1997/98 Joint leader of the CATUR YUGA –project: A cultural exchange between Bali/Indonesia Basel/Switzerland and Freiburg/Germany.
1997-2005 Various short-time-lectureships in Indonesia. Consultant in a research project of UPI Bandung (former IKIP) sponsored by the Ford Foundation: Documentation of traditional musical cultures of Indonesia and a didactical follow-up.
Since 1999 guest professor at the art academy STSI Surakarta in the postgraduate study program “composition”.
